Organizational Context:

The Nutrition Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Area Office Coordinator (Central) in Isiolo, with technical guidance from the Head of Nutrition in Nairobi. The role aligns with WFP's Country Strategic Plan 2023-2027, emphasizing healthy diets to prevent all forms of malnutrition.

Job Purpose:

Provide support to nutrition programs and activities to meet the nutritional needs of WFP beneficiaries.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Offer technical advice to the Area Office team on nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programming.

2. Support program design and implementation of nutrition interventions and contribute to resource mobilization efforts.

3. Conduct regular field visits, improve implementation of nutrition activities, and prepare reports with recommendations.

4. Lead operational partnerships for a multi-sectoral response to nutrition in both emergency and non-emergency settings.

5. Facilitate knowledge sharing and documentation for capacity building around nutrition integration.

6. Collaborate with partners to improve coverage and quality of nutrition programs, identifying gaps and strengthening capacity.

7. Provide guidance on the transition of nutrition management according to new WHO recommendations.

8. Develop and implement social behavior change communication activities for nutrition.

9. Collaborate with the monitoring and evaluation unit to assess food and nutrient gaps.

10. Represent WFP in key nutrition forums and collaborative platforms at the area office.

Qualifications and Experience:

- Master’s degree in nutrition, Public Health, Food Systems and Transformation, Social Sciences, or related field with three years of postgraduate relevant experience.

OR

- Five years of postgraduate professional experience with a first university degree in the mentioned fields.

- Fluency (level C) in English.


Desired Experiences:

- At least four years of experience in humanitarian contexts.

- Operational experience supporting or managing nutrition emergency responses.

- Field experience with the United Nations or non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

- Ability to strategically engage with government and partners to develop and implement multi-sectoral programs.

- Experience in transitioning targeted supplementary feeding program implementation to the government is an advantage.


Functional Capabilities:

1. Knowledge of Nutrients: Utilizes knowledge of vitamins and nutrients to understand the causes of malnutrition.

2. Situation Analysis and Evidence Assessment: Appropriately interprets the nutrition situation, analyzes primary causes of malnutrition, and prepares overviews of food security and nutrition situations.

3. Knowledge of Public Health: Has foundational knowledge of core public health sciences to assess a country’s/region’s health situation.

4. Knowledge of Food System: Analyzes how food systems influence the diets of vulnerable groups and identifies how food systems may contribute to nutrient gaps.

5. Applying Programme & Policy Standards: Leverages nutrition knowledge to provide technical advice to governments for designing and implementing country nutrition programs following international and WFP standards.
