About the Seasonal Worker Scheme (SWS):
The Seasonal Worker Scheme is a UK Government initiative, and Bukura Agricultural College collaborates as an authorized operator. This program caters to the workforce demand for seasonal positions in the UK horticulture sector. The sectors covered under this scheme include:
- Protected Vegetables (glasshouse production)
- Field Vegetables (outside production including herbs, leafy salads, and potatoes)
- Soft Fruits (outdoor and covered)
- Top Fruits
- Vines and Bines (hops and grapes)
- Mushrooms
- Bulbs and cut flowers (grown outdoors and indoors)
- Pot plants and bedding plants
- Hardy ornamental nursery stock (Christmas trees, shrubs)
- Tree and forest nurseries
Types of Work Available:
The majority of seasonal work falls within the fruit sector (55%) and the vegetable/salad sector (25%). Most tasks are manual and unskilled, requiring no prior experience as full training will be provided. Some roles involve machinery operation (e.g., forklift, tractor), requiring a license. Limited opportunities for development are also available.
Work Responsibilities:
- General primary production work in edible and ornamental horticulture
- Crop maintenance, harvesting, husbandry
- Tunnel construction and dismantling
- Irrigation installation/maintenance
- Packing and processing of crops
- Preparing and dismantling growing areas and media
- Supervising horticultural workers
Requirements:
- No specific experience required for manual and unskilled tasks
- Training provided for all roles
- For machinery roles, a valid license is required
- Workers expected to drive vehicles must demonstrate competence and safety on UK roads
